Black labs are great! I had a great one for 11 years! My dad, who came from farm country, used to say the smell of manure was "clean". It's certainly better than what comes out of meat-eaters!
BTW: "Garden" and "Danger" are spelled with the same letters... 😮
Labs are fantastic! I am a keen supporter of rescue dogs and I have a very soft heart for them. My dogs have a wonderful life living out here in the forest by the lake.
I’m not sold on the smell of manure, mushroom dirt, or any other kind of…. $***. I really like my dogs to smell nice and clean, but they don’t always agree with me.
I didn’t realize Garden and Danger are spelled with the same letters. Wow! Interesting. I’m convinced Farmer B’s garden is dangerous… surely there are snakes and creepy crawlies in it! After all, this is Texas!
Armadillos dig holes all over the place. They are very unusual animals, and they are nocturnal. Farmer B’s 2024 cucumber vines are GIGANTIC. The leaves are the size of elephant ears and the vines have already climbed over the garden deer fence - they look like they are about seven feet tall. It must be the mushroom dirt!
Everyone who comes to our house leaves with a basket of tomatoes and cucumbers, whether they want them or not.
What a lovely post Lois! I used to live in Santa Cruz, CA and there was a mushroom farm in town that regularly would replenish the dirt they used for growing their next crop. The whole town would smell like mushroom dirt manure and compost for about a week. It seems to permeate everything! So funny. I love your writing style and really enjoyed your earlier posts from Iceland. Farmers are our unsung heroes in America! Thanks for posting!
I'm so glad you enjoyed my posting about Farmer B, Ed. Mushroom dirt does leave a lasting impression. Iceland was a very interesting place to visit, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unusual travel adventure. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

Yeah, nature! 🐞🐍 We got those. But no armadillos.

Yeah, similar with us. Lots of string beans and green peppers, too. Mom did a lot of pickling and canning!
How ever was it that us two certified city babes, shopping maven’s extraordinaire, worldly and with a spirit of wanderlust, married a farmer!?
Good to know Farmer B is staying busy shoveling that mess!
Yes, it keeps him out of trouble. :)
I can smell the mushroom dirt!!!
It really is a great fertilizer!!
Oh my goodness! Can you smell it all the way over at your house. Lol!
Lol!! That's a smell you never forget!
It's almost as bad as the smell from the bear marking his territory on my garden shed at the cabin!!
Oh no! That is horrible! I can't imagine that one! Eau de Ursus is not my idea of a fragrance I want to encounter any time soon.
