I’m with you 100% on that one! The staff at Lockroy were all happy as can be. They did mention that they depend on courteous invitations from visiting ships to go onboard and use the showers. It was more from an informational standpoint than anything else. It was an amazing place.
Excellent job blending humor into an informative travel piece. I wish I could go, but I'm 100% sure I couldn't hack the cold ... or the constant penguin smells. LOL.
How did I miss this? (Been distracted lately, that's why.) Another fun adventure! (Better you than me!)
Antarctica makes me think of Mars. People think they'll live on Mars, but if living in those conditions was such a thing, there'd be a lot more people living in Antarctica. Or in undersea domes. It's a miserable way to live, fit only for the curious, the scientific, the explorers, or the brave and hardy travelers such as yourself. I just don't think folks have really thought out the whole "living on Mars" thing, and living in Antarctica is, I think, a good way to consider what it means. (And Mars is a lot further away from help if needed.)
This is a wonderful travelogue and I’m really enjoying it. I went to the Antarctic Peninsula in 2007 and loved it. I have a lot of great photography and memories, a trip of a lifetime and I still have one polar fleece shirt with a Gentoo logo. Antarctica merch, who knew.:)
Oh, you sound like the adventurous sort to me, Gonzo. If I could handle it then it will be a breeze for you. I’d like to tell you Eau de Penguin isn’t really that bad, but it certainly is to those of us who have fine-tuned noses. I was serious when I said that one of the screening factors for volunteers is their ability to tolerate Eau de Penguin - the job application states it right up front. Still, it’s worth it because those penguins are so cute.
An amazing place and a fascinating post!
Thank you, Renato. It is truly an amazing place!
Love! I have volunteered for some cool causes and adventures but I don't think I could with a once a month shower!

OTOH, no penguin poop on Mars, so there's that. 😁

Now you know where you can order a new Gentoo polar fleece shirt when you want it. Best to you, Heidi!
Thank you, Lois! Love it.:)
